Research and Development


King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) is a scientific government institution that supports and enhances scientific applied research, it coordinates the activities of government institutions and scientific research centers and aim to develop a national competence in accordance with the requirements of the development of the Kingdom. KACST comprises all the requirements of scientific research, such as laboratories, means of communications, information sources and all necessary facilities.

The R&D activities in KACST are promoted by three main themes:

  • The selection of research projects in accordance with the Kingdom’s strategic sectors.
  • The preparation of technical leaders to support the development of local content.
  • The promotion of national research collaborations.

Saudi Aramco is the state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a fully integrated, global petroleum enterprise and a world leader in exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing and petrochemicals manufacturing. It manages the world’s largest proven conventional crude oil and condensate reserves of 260.2 billion barrels and the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reserves of 288.4 trillion standard cubic feet. Saudi Aramco is also among the top producers of natural gas, maintaining the fourth-largest natural gas reserves in the world. By 2020, Saudi Aramco will have evolved from being the leading oil and gas company that it is today, into a fully integrated, truly global energy and chemicals enterprise with extensive operations across the globe.

King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) is one of the oldest universities in Saudi Arabia, it officially established in 1963. KFUPM is among the top universities in the world with issued patents; according to IFI Claims KFUPM ranked on the 7th place with 183 patents in 2017. The university vision is “To be a preeminent institution known for its globally competitive graduates, cutting edge research, and leadership in energy discoveries.” Several of KFUPM research been commercialized through TAQNIA’s subsidiary Research Product Development Company especially in oil and gas industries.
